Play More: The First Dog-Approved Art Exhibition

A visit to the museums with family and friends often brings more than an artsy experience — it triggers inspiring conversations and deep emotional connections between us and our counterparts. Artist and inventor Dominic Wilcox expands this kind of experience from men to men's best friend -- dogs. He designed the Play More London exhibition solely for his unusual clients, including several interactive custom-made installations.

One installation to start with is the Cruising Canines. Featuring a large fan blowing scents of old shoes and raw meat, it lures our canine friends to step inside a 2-D car cut-out and enjoy a hair-blowing shotgun “ride". Dinnertime Dreams is a ball pool made like a dog bowl. Filled with more than 1000 brown balls resembling dog biscuits, your pets can now willfully plunge into and play with their food. Water Wonder brings splashes of joy by shooting water from one dog bowl to another for dogs to chase.

Besides Wilcox’s installations, the show also exhibits paintings and interactive experiences by five other British artists — Nick White, Clare Mollison, Joanne Hummel-Newel, Robert Nicol and Michelle Thompson. With the help of veterinary experts, these artists are able to stimulate their audience mentally and physically. They tailored their works by using the grey-yellow-blue color spectrum to fit these furry friend’s eyesight. What’s more, artists concerned the eye-level of dogs in the curation and displayed their works at the bottom of the gallery walls.

“Contemporary art has long been an important source of inspiration and fascination for humans, but never before has it been created with a view to drawing the same kind of emotions out of animals instead,” said Wilcox. He challenges himself with an entirely new audience and aims to encourage dog owners to spend more time with their pets. Though the exhibition is designed exclusively for dogs, the playful atmosphere isn’t. Playfulness is at the core of Wilcox’s creative mind, as he stated that it is the “essential base of creativity”. The typical dead-panned silence and distant ambiance do not exist in any exhibitions and creative events of Wilcox. Before the Play More exhibition, he is well-known for surreal inventions such as  Cereal Serving Head Crane Device and Stained Glass Driverless Sleeper Car. “I’m deadly serious about being playful. It’s really important.”, he says.
